Patients’ attitudes and beliefs to presbyopia and its correction

Presbyopia is the gradual inability to focus near objects with age. This study explores patients’ attitudes and beliefs towards presbyopia including preferred modes of refractive correction. In United Kingdom, twenty-four volunteers completed an online questionnaire attended a structured, recorded group. Participants’ age ranged between 36 48 years, representing pre-presbyopic presbyopic population. Attitudes about presbyopia, its significance, opinions current correction multifocal contact lenses were transcribed coded using content analysis for overarching themes patterns. Six participants (25%) already wearing visual while 18 (75%) not. Five key primary clear inter-participant similarities identified as ‘age-related’ (75%), ‘acceptance’ (50%), lack ‘familiarity word presbyopia’ (65%), mixed/ reluctant attitude ‘towards (multifocal) lenses’ (62.5%), ‘comfort convenience’ (79%) whereby cost less importance.
